In a Nutshell: The story is written in a diary style revolving around the main character, Sarah Prine, who was a pioneer in Arizona. It is through her entries her story is told to you, as well as the greater story of the settling of the great West. Sarah does not know how to read or write very well in the beginning, and her entries read that way. But as she masters the language as she gets older, her entries (Thankfully) become better written. Throughout the diary you experience the hardships of droughts, bandits, Indians, cattle ranching, army life and family life. Woven throughout all the high drama and loss is a tender love story between Sarah and an army captain.
My Take: A new book club favorite. The story is so developed, and you love the main character. You just want to have some coffee with her. She is someone you could really admire. You have got everything...Indians, guns, passion, betrayal and love, all in one awesome book. What is nice is that the author has a wonderful momentum and ebb and flow to the pace of the book. At once, it is suspenseful and dramatic, and others are tender and quiet, much like Sarah's life. The love story between Sarah and Jack is believable and beautiful. Another MUST HAVE.
